On what observation actually asks of us
A first exchange
— To observe is not to record. Recording is what a camera does. Observation is what a person does when they let a thing take longer than they wanted to give it.
— Then the discipline is patience?
— The discipline is refusing to be the loudest thing in the room. If you are, you will only ever hear yourself.
Preserved because — It names, for the first time, the difference between looking and observing — and why the Observatory would need to insist on the second.
When was the last time you slowed enough for a thing to reveal itself, instead of naming it before it could?
