The Curator's Letters

Some visitors arrive with the question they have been carrying for months. Some arrive with the question they have been avoiding. Most arrive with no question at all, and worry, quietly, that this means they have come to the wrong place. You have not come to the wrong place. The Observatory has never asked a visitor to arrive prepared. It has only ever asked them to arrive. If a question surfaces while you are here, we will preserve it. If none does, that is also a kind of observation — and one worth trusting.

The Observatory was not designed to be efficient. It was designed to be trustworthy. The two are not the same. Trust is what remains after speed is subtracted. Every fast place you have ever known was measuring something other than the thing it claimed to be measuring. We would rather be slow, and be honest about it, than be fast, and quietly become the sort of place we did not intend to build.
