The first page I did not tear out

Journal, undated

I wrote for six years without keeping a page. I told myself the writing itself was the point — that finishing a sentence was enough, that no one, including me, needed to read it again. Tonight I did not tear it out. I do not know why. Something in the room asked me not to. This is that page.
Mira Vail· becoming · courage · truth
Preserved because — The first entry Mira kept. Before this, she wrote in order to destroy it. This is where the Observatory quietly began.

Correspondence, unaddressed

Whoever you are, and whenever you arrive: You do not owe this place a performance. You do not owe it an answer. You do not owe it the version of yourself you have been practicing for other rooms. If you leave something here, leave it because you want another person — one you will never meet — to see slightly more clearly on a day you are not around for. That is all this place has ever asked of anyone.
Mira Vail· belonging · responsibility
Preserved because — The first thing Mira wrote directly to someone she would never meet. It is the tone the Observatory later inherited.
